A national race, preserved and restarted.

Extemp Central created a season-long way to recognize sustained excellence in high school extemporaneous speaking. This independent project preserves that record and gives the race a new, autonomous life.

The original NPR

Writer and editor Logan Scisco developed the National Points Race at Extemp Central. It grouped selected national-circuit tournaments into five tiers and awarded competitors points based on placement and elimination-round progress. Extemp Central published ten completed seasons. The record begins in 2008-09 and ends with Robert Zhang winning the 2024-25 race.

The pause

Extemp Central stopped publishing the NPR after the 2024-25 season. No official contemporaneous NPR was published for 2025-26. The archive remains valuable, but the season-long national comparison disappeared.

Saras Totey's independent revival

Saras Totey independently rebuilt the idea as an autonomous, open, and auditable system. The 2025-26 season is reconstructed after the fact to prove the pipeline. The 2026-27 season is the current live race. The successor keeps the last published scoring policy, preserves source evidence, reports ambiguity instead of guessing, and exposes how every calculation was made.
